Ken Burns' Jazz
Produced while working for PBS Interactive
Date Launched: January 2001
URL: www.pbs.org/jazz
- Took over project in November 1999 when hired producer failed to produce any content
- Hired jazz experts to write nearly a dozen essays throughout the site; excerpted and re-edited the remainder from Jazz: A History of America's Music
- Negotiated with Capitol Records, Verve Records, and Columbia/Legacy for music rights to play clips of music on almost every page of the site; also negotiated with NPR to use excerpts from "The NPR 100" and other recorded programs.
- Chose all pictures for every page throughout the site, scanned all photos and corrected images where necessary, and ensured proper credit was given and that payments were made
- Hand-coded entire site (with help from the Online staff on the nearly 100 biography pages)
- Accomplished all this in only 6 weeks
